Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee.

April 4, 1968

Riots occur in cities across the U.S., including three days of rioting centered in the Grove Hall area. Although not as violent as in other cities, in part due to volunteer peace patrols by residents, the rioting inures 21 people, leads to 30 arrests, and results in property damages of some $50,000.
